The 1969 summer house needed a gut remodel—so Carisa Salerno and Aaron Levin rebuilt it piece by piece: “In the end, we feel like we built a sculpture, not a house.”

Architect Leo Marmol reinstated one of Neutra's original features by reinstalling floor-to-ceiling glass around one corner of the carport. The L.A. Times article noted that previous owners had covered the windows with chipboard to block views from the street; Marmol opted for a new half-wall and shades to help make the space more livable for its owners.

In between the guest suites, there are structures for storage, maintenance and a transit waiting suite, all connected with terraced landscape pockets and courtyards.

Flooded with natural light, the kitchen is set up with daily rituals in mind. An espresso machine, ceramic cups, and stereo for music bring rhythm and comfort to morning routines. “It’s how I would want to move through the morning and day,” shares Mila.

The eight-foot drywall ceiling that originally existed was removed, with Mila sanding, painting, and insulating the original trusses to highlight them as a design element.

The door to the bathroom has a steel detail that recalls the exterior. "It's the only interior door in this little micro-building," says Shaw. "Therefore, we felt like it couldn't just be a door; it had to be, in a sense, like a piece of furniture."

Designed by Minneapolis firm Sala Architects, the 820-square-foot Metal Lark Tower marked the first rental cabin to open at Nordlys Lodging, a 140-acre property in Frederic, Wisconsin. Small windows on the northwest side of the two-story structure provide privacy and protection from winter winds. Solar panels and natural heat insulated by the triple-paned windows add to the structure’s efficiency.

Architect Will Winkelman and landscape architect Todd Richardson collaborated with client JT Bullitt to design a house that blends into its surroundings in Steuben, Maine. The green roof gives the impression that "the ground just jumped onto the roof," Richardson says.
