The roof of the carport creates a sheltered open play area for the kids for when it rains, as well as more coverage when Charlotte and Adam are loading or unloading the car.

The 1x6 Ipe decking is from Crosscut Lumber, and delineates the dining area from the lounge area. Concrete pavers from Mutual Materials mark the lounge area, also with a built-in bench and concrete fireplace.

The pop-out window has 530-T Series sliding doors by Fleetwood.

The mudroom cabinets blend into the wall color and the walnut top doubles as a bench.

With the desk overlooking the living room, and the window seats, the design created different spots for people to be within the same large space.

The living room was kept as is, with the existing painted woodwork and fireplace. The dark wood floors inspired the walnut detailing in the new addition.

The living room, enjoying the most spacious volume beneath the vaulted ceiling, includes a Noguchi pendant lamp, (at right) a vintage 1955 Kroehler sofa, (at left) a vintage Fin Juhl Japan Chair and ottoman, and (also at left) a vintage Magnus Olesen loveseat and coffee table.

The mudroom is now on grade with the backyard, and the double-height ceiling creates a light box effect into the floors above and below.

A covered porch is set under the second-floor addition, and gives the family a lot more access to the backyard. "The kids play outside, and can run inside, and we'll make up a little meal to eat and sit out on the porch,

The wood floors throughout are red Oak, and the stair design was streamlined.

Scholtens incoporated the porch into the finished space as a family room, and covered walls and ceiling in knotty Pine panelling, as a callback to the previous porch. The couple's golden sofa tipped off Spot Lab that yellow was a favorite color, while the lamp in the corner was kept from the downstairs Tiki bar. The wooden birds came with the house.

The pine boards continue on the ceiling in the stairwell. Green zellige tile forms a nook for the freestanding fireplace.

Fireclay's Essentials tiles in Manzanita Satin create texture throughout, while Concrete Collaborative's Pacifica Slab in Mint Retro Mix forms the striking countertops and shower surfaces. Kohler Components fixtures in black provide a bold contrast against the custom rift white oak vanity.

The open-concept living space highlights the quirky architecture of the home.

Daltile Keystone tiles in Arctic White and Desert Gray create duo-tone effect in the ADU bathroom, while a custom Kable Design Build vanity in birch plywood with Pionite Stonedust laminate top provides durable, budget-friendly style. The Concretti Reno sink in Kale sits on top.
