The Hideout is currently available for rent on Airbnb. “Obviously you can get off the grid and go to a more traditional cabin or camping, but to have a space that’s also designed very internationally brings it to the next level of that experience,” says Castillero.

Architectural designer Grey Shaeffer of Willa Work designed a petite backyard guesthouse at her Portland, Oregon, home for occasions when her mom comes to visit. The siding and decking are a fused bamboo product from Dasso XTR, in classic espresso.

The flooring in the main room and bedroom is Worthwood Solid End Grain from Oregon Lumber.

The kitchen cabinets are made of CVG Douglas fir plywood, which Grey stained, finished, and topped with handmade Japanese tile from California-based Wa-Kei & Company. The wall lights are original refurbished Eklipta lights by Arne Jacobson for Louis Poulsen. The ceramic bowl is by Linda Hsaio of Knotwork L.A.

The two new buildings create a courtyard-like feel in the small urban backyard.

Technically, this small building is not a tree house, since it’s braced at the ground by supports, but Grey didn’t want to compromise the tree, which “doesn’t have a very long lifespan,” the designer says. “So, I didn’t want to jeopardize however long that tree had with any excess baggage.”

Light oak panels by Finsa clad both the kitchen cabinetry and the built-in units that appear in the living room and entryway. "We used natural materials where we could, but we were also mindful of keeping high-touch surfaces durable," explains Anne-Marie Armstrong, co-principal of AAmp Studio.

Dubbed Cortes, the 1972 Land Yacht is located on Vancouver Island.

The walls, floor, and ceiling of one of the Olive Houses is enveloped in a pale pink tone—the color found on the leaves of the olive trees that dot the landscape.

Matt's brother, Sam, also fabricated the custom steel railing and floating stair treads. Underneath the stairs, a desk is built into the landing.

Designer Matthew Welsh Weinberger was introduced to the owners of the skoolie by a mutual friend after he saw some furniture and built-in work Welsh Weinberger had done in his own home. It was the first built project at this scale that he had taken on professionally.

To save on budget, many of the existing appliances—including the washing machine and dishwasher—were kept and used in the new build-out. The hallway doubles as a functional space, with storage, laundry, and a fridge.

Black-framed windows and doors tie in with the black metal roof and dark chimney.

The tongue-and-groove wood boards are divided at the half-height by a contrasting, black steel plate.

Natural green hues are incorporated throughout, including the bedding and artwork. Raca Architekci designed the custom-built headboards seen in the cabins.

The custom-made furniture is constructed of varnished plywood in combination with black steel frames. Here, a wardrobe and desk are combined as one unit, complete with a full-length mirror.

The second of the two bedrooms includes a double bed and desk area. Similarly, the glass door can be opened to further connect the sleeping space to the outdoors.

One of the two bedrooms includes two smaller beds. A glass door opens to a small Juliet balcony with a glass rail.

A custom-made, birch-and-steel frame cabinet with a marble top and ceramic vessel sink is accented by round mirrors.
