The cabin’s exterior is clad in dark-stained western red cedar and fiber cement panels, and its cantilevered deck provides panoramic views.

In the living room, walls painted Sherwin Williams Snowbound and white oak floors balance warmth and light. Large, matching windows frame the ocean and forest.

In the entry, a plush mat absorbs snow, sand, and mud. It was designed to be removable for cleaning or replacement.

On the ground level, geothermal heating for the concrete radiant floor is supplemented by warmth from a Hoxter fireplace.

Unlike the ground-level concrete flooring, the oak floors upstairs from Hinterseer are unheated, but the bedrooms are warm and comfortable, thanks to the fireplace chimney that runs through the center of the house, hay-insulated clay ceilings, and some brightly colored blankets.

The stairs connecting the three levels of the house are made of concrete, with iron railing. “The are no white walls in the house; everything is either paneled in pine wood or or converted in a stucco that mimics the look of concrete,” says the architect.

Every space, including the living and dining sections seen here, has “furniture, objects and artworks that bring us memories,” says Smud. The bench, coffee tables, and dining table are by the late Alejandro Sticotti.

The glass-walled ground level has an open layout that includes a kitchen and dining area, a living space, and a home office that can be closed off from the rest with hidden sliding doors. The central structure holds the staircase and a powder room.

Though the original home didn’t have a foundation, Jes added one and raised the house about six feet to safeguard against potential flooding from a nearby river. The new house also includes a much larger second-level primary bedroom and en suite bathroom, plus a small balcony.
