Located in La Unión, a city and commune in Chile’s Los Ríos region, Refugio 3x3 is set in a forest on the side of a new lot of residential houses that were built in response to the recent expansion of city limits.

The denim-colored sofa is from West Elm (a nod to the jean shorts featured in Tyler's "Sunday in the Park" poster), while the pumpkin-hued armchairs were a splurge at Soho Home.

The renovation took 2.5 years, in part due to common Covid-related delays, and was officially completed in June 2023.

Before: The previous floor plan was fairly standard, with compartmentalized living areas.

The kitchen grew by about a third, and is covered in terrazzo floor tile from Concrete Collaborative. The cabinets are Ultracraft in Rift Cut White Oak, topped with Caesarstone Quartz in Fresh Concrete. The pendant lights are from Ferm Living and are the Brass Low Socket with Tall Opal Shade.

Beaulieu found a more period-appropriate front door at a local salvage door and painted it Benjamin Moore “Space Black.” The existing red oak floors were kept throughout the house, except at the entry, which is now laid with Ann Sacks Savoy Classics Hive Mosaic tile in Linen. The umbrella stand is by Umbra.

Before: When the couple bought the home in 2017, the 1892 Victorian worker’s cottage didn’t have much in the way of curb appeal. “The quote-unquote landscaping was dirt and broken glass,” says Beaulieu.
