Before: The goal of the renovation, undertaken by Rumeu and his cousin, the owner, was to be minimally invasive to the original hexagon structure, with the exposed woodwork and built-ins.

In the living room, the glass coffee table is designed by Miguel Milá, and the Cadaqués armchair by Correa & Milá is a bespoke design that originated with this house.

The entry hallway doubles as a library, filled with books related to Chris's vocational life. A kitchenette with a two-burner stovetop and small refrigerator offers a place to prepare simple meals.

The interior walls and ceiling are made of pine, while the bookshelves and desk are fir. Polished concrete floors balance the nearly all-wood material palette.

The central living space can be converted into a dining room by pulling out the steps leading up the kitchen—and with it, a fold-up table and two benches that seat eight people.

The home is clad in corrugated iron coated with Zincalume. “We chose the cladding so we could curve the metal sheets and create barrel vaulted roofs,” says architect William Samuels. “The finish gives a natural reflection to the surface of the house, picking up on the colors of the surrounding bush and the changing daylight.”

The entryway and all of the communal living areas were situated on the garden floor. Deciding to turn the basement level into a rental unit, Hurwitz and Vogel replicated what a historic townhome would look like with a parlor-level entrance—with a few changes. Recreating a traditional vestibule contrasts with the more modern living and dining room at the rear. The staircase and utilities work like a spine around which the other rooms are organized.

The renovated dining area is clad with the house's original cedar panels, which were re-milled.
