The home is a study in careful balance. In more architecturally expressive areas, the furnishings are subtle and discreet. In more minimalist areas, like the acoustically engineered “listening den,” colorful, sculptural furniture boldly punctuates the space.

The master ensuite is nestled into the pitched roof form of the “inner house”, a feature which is emphasized through the contrast of the white tiles and black structural elements.

Natural light and striking views are welcomed through Kolbe VistaLuxe WD LINE windows which the design team selected for their construction quality, thin wood profiles, and extruded aluminum exteriors.

The long-leaf-pine roof decking was salvaged from the original home and used on the ceiling in the new playroom.

It was Elsie, the goldendoodle, who started it. “We were living in a tiny house in the center of Byron Bay with two little children and Elsie in the middle of the wet season,” says homeowner Cheryl Kitchener.

Marlatt built the cabinets in place from Russian Birch plywood, and the counters are a thin application of Neolith stone. The backsplash is glass, making for easy clean-up, and a few of the cabinet fronts are painted Masonite, for fun pops of color. The ceramics on the shelves are by Burgevin.

On a sought after an idyllic island in the center of Amsterdam an old warehouse, formerly in use as a pillow factory and a garage has been converted to a warm and eclectic family home. The kitchen features a mixture of green tiles, green painted mullions, and exposed wood beams for a warm, soft feeling that contrast sharply with the more industrial stainless steel island. The kitchen island incorporates a stove top and storage, and benefits from natural light from the skylight overhead.
