To bring sunlight into the lakeside home, Max-A set a giant skylight in one of its roof facets.

A variety of factors—the site, the topography, the dramatic cantilever above the water—led to the home’s specific square shape and position on the site.

The whole house is made from Argentenian pine. Inside, it’s painted a fresh white, while thermal wood wraps the exterior.

Daniela and Francisco are a psychologist and engineer by day (respectively), but they’d almost always rather be outdoors. They’re avid hikers and passionate about sustainability, so when they had the chance to build an off-the-grid vacation home on a rustic lakeside patch of land in Southern Chile, they jumped on it.

The house is completely off grid. It operates on solar panels, wood-fire heat and water from the lake; there’s even a compost sewage system.

Designer Ralph Germann inserted a partially glazed box into a 19th-century barn to form the main living space of Christine Bonvin’s home in Switzerland. Soft light enters through original arrow-loop windows.

In the dining area, the barn’s structure is visible through both a skylight and a glass wall with a sliding door.

“The freedom to build in Bali is exhilarating and addictive,” Rod says. “From the range of natural stones, timbers and hand-made finishes, to the endless patience of our construction teams, it’s a very rewarding experience.”

Moody tones reflecting the earthy tones of Canggu continue from the exterior into the kitchen, setting a calm tone. The dining table in the foreground was made in Jepara. “Indonesian craftsmanship with wood is one of the luxuries available to us here,” says Rod.

A loster screen mediates the sun’s rays as it filters in to the living areas from the west at sunset, gently illuminating the natural teak wood that in turn balances the home’s dark palette.
