Howmeowner and designer Ghislaine Viñas painted the glass front door's frame in Benjamin Moore's lemon-y hue, Baby Chick. Her graphic designer husband Jaime created the numerical graphic that also serves as a privacy screen.

A few simple pieces of artwork can tie a room together without a huge cost.

Cedar ceilings throughout are a nod to the cedars in the old-growth forest surrounding the house. A window over the sink gives the homeowners a peek-a-boo view to the front of their house, so they can catch glimpses of foliage, even while washing the dishes.

Joan has always admired midcentury design and architecture, so Signal added a slatted fir divider between the dining room and the guest wing, giving nod to the iconic era without straying from the home’s contemporary, Northwest appeal. A trio of George Nelson Bubble lamps follows the aesthetic lead.

For the living room, Dovetail’s metal shop fabricated a custom fireplace to go between the Quantum windows. The steel surround is coated in an antique black finish to complement the stained cedar wall.

The primary bedroom features a built-in walnut bed handcrafted by Kyle (Stille Home).

To enlarge the bathroom, they integrated the closet space into the new bathroom, and thus had to create new storage. They designed a custom walnut bed wall in the master bedroom that contains built-in wardrobes.

Outer Space Landscape Architects built a custom fireplace in the backyard, which acts as a backstop for the seating area.

The larger master bathroom was reoriented and updated with new materials—the same ones that have been used throughout the house including walnut and the Western red cedar siding.

Klopf Architecture updated this Eichler with a radiant floor heating system, re-stained paneling, and a new office/guest room filled with Eichler hallmarks like dark bronze door handles.

Living, dining, and kitchen spaces flow into one another in the soaring great room. Here, the Sacramento firm placed new, polished concrete slabs over the original ones to alleviate unsightly cracks.

Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects, and Flegels Construction joined forces to refurbish this Palo Alto Eichler. Standout features include a fully opening glass wall, an outdoor living area with a kitchen and fire pit, and furniture by Kayu and Primary Pouf.

In the South Bay, San Jose–based BLAINE Architects expanded this Eichler by transforming the old carport into an atrium. A folding glass NanaWall system allows the owners to watch their kids in the playroom from the kitchen.

BoConcept couches anchor a Restoration Hardware coffee table and a Crate and Barrel carpet in the living area. The gray pouf is by CB2, and the artwork is by Senechal.

“The clients’ main priorities in their lives consisted of: their kids, their friends, their food,” says the firm. “We knew we had to knock down the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room to create one big, open space - this immediately created ease of flow.”

Now, all of the main living spaces benefit from the expansive glass wall that looks out on the backyard.
