The new stairs replace a narrow set that was only 30 inches wide. The couple packed storage underneath.

Each inch is accounted for in the 1,916-square-foot home. Cabinets and clever storage for wine are tucked under the stairs.

The new staircase to the bunk room also has a privacy screen made of a bookcase with storage.

A tall, slender window in front of the sink creates a built in light well, allowing daylight to reflect further inward.

The existing deck was extended to allow access from the master bedroom to rear yard.

"The most challenging part of the design was fusing the old part of the house with the new addition," says principal architect Alex Terry. The character and architectural integrity of the single-level 1950s ranch house was thoughtfully reconsidered during the addition and remodel. The home’s front porch, typical of the period, was refreshed with Ipe decking and railing.

The deck, which overlooks the uninterrupted forest, has been left uncovered so the inside of the house receives ample natural light throughout the year.

Connected by an exterior stone staircase, the rooftop level offers seating and dining areas and an outdoor kitchen.

The hotel’s gathering areas feature lush, native greenery and a vibrant mix of locally crafted products from the Oaxacan region.
