A partial-height carrel conceals Kurtzman's work station in the primary bedroom, with additional storage situated behind the desk that was designed in collaboration with and built by Andrew Hussey. The weaving draped over the front is by Sidney Brower, Gideon's father. Paintings on display throughout the home are by his mother, Cynthia Brower.
Australian architect Lucy Clemenger utilized shakkei principles to dissolve the boundaries between her home and the neighboring park. "A glazed open-plan living space visually embraces the park," Clemenger says. "The floating timber-clad extension was designed to frame views of the landscape while also providing privacy in the sleeping quarters."
Raise the Roof
Using a commercial roof in a residential project was a first for architect Michael Epstein. While similar systems are often covered, Epstein chose this long-span roof deck from Epic Metals for its beam-like interior face, which hides fastenings in its deep grooves, creating a flat-panel appearance.
