Because of its remote location, the newly-built six-bedroom lodge uses propane to cook and heat the building and its tankless water heater.

“We’re seeing Seattle increasingly populated by townhomes that are high-cost but low-quality in terms of materials and design,” says Wittman. “We wanted to make higher quality housing that is affordable to more people.”

The tiny cabin currently sits on a friend’s property, but it’s designed to be mobile, should the couple need to move it. “It can be dragged away with nothing more than a tractor,” says Nathalie.

RIC Design Build paid homage to the midcentury era and architect Alan McCullough’s legacy while making the house work for today.

Instead of adding counter space on both sides of the kitchen, Wooden opted for floor-to-ceiling cabinets, which provide ample storage space and help keep the kitchen tidy. A center island provides additional storage, prep space, and a breakfast bar. At the back, a classic black panel window and patio door lead to the family's outdoor space while bringing much-needed natural light into the formerly dark kitchen.

The dining table and chairs in the kitchen were handcrafted by the homeowner from timber harvested on-site.

The architects removed the shutters and swapped in casement windows. Benjamin Moore Gray now coats the brick, and a metal roof protects the porch.

Two hours north of New York City, an unusual barn emerges from a hill just off a country road. Its black siding and bright-red window frames hint at the imaginative playground inside. This space, with its rope-railed catwalk and indoor tent, is just one element of the multifaceted getaway architecture and design firm BarlisWedlick Architects designed for fund manager Ian Hague.

The verandas provide a threshold between the internal and external spaces. “They soften the abrupt change and mediate the relationship between inside and out,” says architect Ben Shields.

The gable roof and L-shaped structure add a buffer against the sound of winds blowing at up to 45 miles per hour. “You don’t hear the outside,” says Ravi.

Stone pavers lead up to the front entrance of the beautifully updated home.

In recreating the bathroom, Mendes employed a wall-mounted sink, white-painted walls and black hexagonal floor tile.

In a recent remodel, the exterior received a full paint job and new landscaping.
