A print by Alex Smith, along with drawings by Cammie Staros and Karl Haendel, hang in the lounge beside a painting by John Finneran and a photo by Lizz.

Recently listed in the Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, this renovated and expanded 1940s cottage sits on an elevated lot above other homes on the street. Multiple patios surround the L-shaped structure, providing a welcoming entrance.

"The ‘sugar cube’ like volumes of the complex allows the architecture to frame the historic home to the north and the seamless mirrored glass windows reflect the surrounding context onto the building facade," says designer Benjamin Hall. "It's sort of acting like a canvas for the context."

The design team created four different outdoor spaces—a planted terrace off the living room, a screened-in porch, a rooftop deck above the porch, and a yard—to achieve the indoor/outdoor lifestyle the homeowners craved.

Requirements for licensed contractors depend on the scope of work and the location of the project.

All the kitchen cabinets and appliances are consolidated into one island. Both the island and light fixture were designed by Berman Horn Studio. The countertop is by Abet Laminati.

In Sunnyvale, California, architect Ryan Leidner cracked open a 1962 Eichler with a crisp remodel flush with foliage. He replaced the home’s vertical plywood facade with one-inch strips of American red cedar set at two depths. The rhythmic slats conceal a garage door that swings open on a hidden hinge. At the entryway, two massive panes of frosted glass shimmer with light and shadow from the atrium inside. Homeowners Isabelle Olsson and Matthaeus Krenn stand out front.

Sandwiched between two ornate Victorians, the London home designed by Alma-nac remedies a midcentury blunder with a contemporary correction.

The walls of the stairwell are made of board-formed concrete painted black. “Everything in the house is experimental,” Mehdi says of the atypical dwelling, “the materials, the layout, the garden, the exterior.”

Hoertdoerfer’s vision for the open-air cabana included holes in the wall for plants to poke through. Karen designed the seating and the chandelier, which was fabricated by artist Eric Doran from a piece of metal Karen found in his shop.
