“Almost every plank on the <i>Mirene </i>has been replaced,” says Ryan Phelan of the 112-year-old tugboat she and her husband, Stewart Brand, have lived on for more than 40 years. The gleaming boat, once derelict but restored to seaworthiness in an extensive renovation the couple started in 1982, is docked at Waldo Point Harbor in Sausalito. The waterfront community is “very engaged,” says Ryan. “When anybody needs something, ten people say, ‘How can I help?’ ”

One of the main goals of the construction was to do as little harm as possible to the existing environment, which includes waterways that salmon depend upon. Herrin and his team created a garden roof that covers the full extent of the home to meet this objective. “This helps control storm water runoff and also replaces lost insect habitat—insects being a critical food source for juvenile salmon,” he says.

When you stay in Manshausen, you’ll be suprised to find a hot tub and dam that you can enjoy at your leisure. It holds up to 14 people and leads down to a dam that holds salt water that’s pumped into the contained area to keep it fresh.

Each hut consists of two bedrooms with double beds, a small alcove, bathroom, shower, and small kitchen. Stinessen made sure to provide enough built-in storage for visitors, while also keeping the surfaces natural and raw.

The house is oriented north-south, with the broad side of the structure facing east-west. This guarantees not only gorgeous views of the sunset, but also minimizes wind exposure.
