Carport doors swing open to the alley outside of the studio, where the property extends enough for additional landscaping. The corrugated steel siding comes from a surplus from a nearby apartment building. “There’s a lot of urban infill potential in Seattle’s neighborhoods,” Wittman remarks. “We’re catching up to older, denser cities in this regard.”

The courtyard is sunken because of the existing grade. The Albezia shade tree was planted when the outdoor area was still scrap yard, an “act of hope and faith in the future,” says Wittman.

The narrow column that supports the floating roof structure is tucked into the reading nook. The client found savings in the budget by purchasing the finishing materials—including terrazzo, Neolith solid surface, and paint—as well as light fittings and kitchen appliances themselves.

The home's courtyard is ideal for indoor/outdoor living. By opening the sliding glass doors, the kitchen space is connected to a courtyard dining space, which is ideal for family gatherings and entertaining.

Visitors experience the beauty of the courtyard upon entry as they step atop large pavers leading up to the wood deck.

The couple added a 50-year-old olive tree to create a sense of arrival for guests.

Large windows provide views to the courtyard while drawing in plentiful daylight. Aballs Wall Sconces from Parachilna march down the hallway to a small office space with built-ins.

The living room is a blend of old and new, simple and bold, playful and sophisticated with Muuto, Tom Dixon, and repurposed Maharam furniture.

Large sliding glass doors connect the interior living spaces to the outside, providing seamless indoor/outdoor transitions.

The open living space is full of natural light with vaulted ceilings that heighten the space. White walls provide the perfect backdrop for the designers’ bold palette of colors and materials.

Furniture designer Tom Deacon teamed up with pal and architect Andrew Jones to renovate his Toronto townhouse. “Architects tend to think of the building first, the interiors second, and last, the furniture. Our approach was the opposite,” Jones says.

The kitchen countertops are soapstone and the faucet is by Axor.

The Lowreys worked with architect Luis Sánchez and a team of local craftsmen to complete the build. The custom counters in the kitchen are terrazzo and granite; the oven and cooktop are from Teka.

The custom Bulthaup kitchen is outfitted with Gaggenau appliances and Caesarstone countertops.

This home in Melbourne by design duo Kathryn Robson and Susie Cohen has deep nook shelves at one end of the wardrobe, which gives the bathroom a warm, natural and organic feel.

The new bedrooms in the addition have a playful ceiling treatment. "We took advantage of the shape of the building to give them a whimsical ceiling form," says VW.

The boys’ former bedroom became a walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom, and the couple kept the worn oak flooring for the character. "I always say, I was over-sharing a bathroom with three guys," says Catherine.

Mature vegetation helps the new yard feel more settled.
