Several interior walls were removed so light could penetrate the space more fully. Fiberboards made from recycled cardboard and newspaper fibers line the ceilings and floors.

When not in use as the headboard, the large redwood slab folds down to become a desk.

The primary bathroom has a large walk-in shower that can easily fit a walker or wheelchair. Green Centura tile covers the floors, while white subway tile is from Olympia Tile (leftover from former jobs at Ben Homes). The latter is also used in the kitchen and at the bar.

The banquette upholstery fabric is Tonic Living, paired with an Eames conference table and vintage Knoll Breuer Cesca chairs. The windows above the banquette open to the screened porch.

To save on costs, Caught suggested pulling back to just one copper-clad wardrobe in the primary bedroom. The rich burgundy on the opposite robe is the perfect foil.

The home office's built-in desk has enough space for parents to work while the kids tackle art projects or homework without feeling too crowded.

Hotho added a clerestory window to a light well, as well as an open shelving unit to divide the space, both of which let light flow through. The vintage campaign table is used as a desk, but can be broken down and stowed in place of a mattress, when the couple want to use the room as a guest suite.

The design team retained the old supports, which now frame the kitchen. Jessica picked DeVol cabinets and systems for their traditional-meets-streamlined style.

The window wall counter is M. Teixeira Soapstone: “We needed something durable for both outdoor and indoor use,” says Mattingly. Stig stained and installed the wood counters from Home Depot, on both the sink wall and island.

Massive glass folding doors connect the living area to the rear yard.

The architects lined the hallway adjacent to the kitchen with oak storage cabinets.

The Eames lounge chair is from Design Within Reach and is upholstered in Flamiber Cayenne fabric. The couch is by Floyd, and the rug is from ABC Carpet and Home.
