A custom whitewashed oak mirror, White paint by Benjamin Moore, and a lighting program by Melanie Freundlich carry the brightness throughout the loft. The Grid sofa is by Resource Furniture. The public spaces are separated from the private bedrooms by the new Sheetrock addition.

The kitchen has been designed in collaboration with Henrybuilt. The laminate cabinets are paired with a marble countertop by SMC Stone.

Inside the Cube, a Wishbone chair by Hans Wegner pulls up to a built-in painted lacquer desk.

Across from it, a Murphy bed by Resource Furniture—lined with Camilla Meijer wallpaper and featuring a customized niche—allows the space to function as a guest room. An electric Velux skylight frames views of the original tin plates above. The architects chose to leave space between the top of the structure and the ceiling to maintain the rectangular proportions of the loft. “It reads right away,” Singer says of the volume. “It’s very satisfying.”

“This sink is one of the craziest things I've done in my whole career,” says Kaplan, who had his long-time stone fabricator build it from scratch, crafted with mitered pieces of marble fit together so the veining runs through uninterrupted in “beautiful waterfalls,” and the infinity drain is tiled out of view.

Engelsman gave the kitchen an L-shaped layout with a large island workspace at the center, and pushed the tall storage into the garage, to create a wide circulation space to access the dining room and backyard.

The bathrooms were modeled after Japanese ryokans. Here in the main bathroom, muted Fireclay tiles clad the shower, which features a built-in bench and Purist fixtures from Kohler.

A see-through entry hall joins the living areas with a bedroom wing.

Locally milled cypress siding, a naturally rot-resistant wood, will darken over time.

A covered front porch spills out to the yard and anchors the house to the site.

“The parts of the building used at daytime are positioned at the northern access level of the site,” explain the architects. “These ground floor living areas are preceded by generous covered terraces on the garden side.”

“The north and south facades are set back in relation to the wood paneling so that they are perceived as framing.”

A tiny outbuilding offers a cozy living space inside a simple shell.

A tall wall spans across the front of the house to enhance the overall sense of privacy.

The home’s eye-catching facade features glass bricks and an A-frame roof.

At first glance, the structure appears to be a single-story home. The surrounding trees create additional privacy as the yard begins to slope toward the rear.
