The ferns encircle the kitchen and even camouflage the refrigerator. "I worked with Tempest Tileworks here in Portland, who made each tile by hand and gave me guidance on how to paint with glaze, which I'd never done before," says Eng-Goetz. The green range is from Lacanche.

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the American Woolens Dye house is a brick and timber structure that was originally built in 1880. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it served as a textile mill before a thoughtful and extensive renovation transformed the property into a gorgeous live/work space.

The interior features exposed ceiling beams and concrete walls, and the decor celebrates natural materials like timber and jute.

The V-shaped structure delineates the subtle junction between the living and sleeping zones. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors frame vistas of lush vegetation and rugged cliffs, while opening directly to the decked patio.

The blue-hued volume stands in glassy contrast against the nocturnal blackness of the mountainside.

“Our favorite parts of the project are all the small nooks where you can find your own personal space,” note the architects. “These spaces are also connected to the main space, so everyone can be ‘alone and together’ at the same time.”

“The big glass panes make the extension very light and spacious, contrasting with the old cottage,” say the architects.

The “practically maintenance-free” window frames are built of untreated heartwood.
