Brooklyn-based architecture firm Estudio Esmero worked within the foundation and steel structure of an existing carriage house in upstate New York for this new build, which features concrete floors with bright gold kintsugi details.

Attention to detail was important to both the architects and the owners; in place of more traditional moldings, reveals at baseboards and ceilings bridge these junctures.

New windows, lighter floors, and crisp white walls lighten up the interior dramatically. Greenery NYC also redesigned the courtyard, making sure to leave a decorative screen from the 60s in a nod to the building’s history.

The refurbished baseboard at the staircase meets the streamlined trim of the newly remodeled spaces.

A custom-made sofa fills the wall, with a coffee table from Sun City Exports. The rug is from West Elm.

The focal point of the home’s modernized exterior is a custom, wood-and-steel entry gate designed by atelier KS and built by DeFauw Design + Fabrication, a local fabricator who also made custom closing hardware for the piece. Franz and Paré-Mayer paired angled cypress slats with an industrial metal frame to create the entryway. A few paces behind the gate, a large glass door provides direct access to the home, fulfilling the owners’ wish for an entry vestibule that would be separate from the street. The angled wood slats offer privacy from the exterior, while selectively allowing light to penetrate through.

The dining area features a Portica dining table from Room & Board surrounded by molded fiberglass chairs by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller.. A Stickbulb pendant hangs above the table.

A wood framed banquette frames the dining space. Herman Miller Eames Shell Chairs and Alvar Aalto Pendants decorate the eating area.

A custom steel dining table with a walnut insert is surrounded by Eames Molded Plastic side chairs; the hanging fixture is from Tech Lighting.

Consisting of two barnlike volumes set atop a stone foundation, the Depot House offers a locally rooted vision of New England modernism.

The dark-stained exterior cladding stands in contrast to the light wood decking and warm interiors.

A soapstone island contrasts with white oak cabinetry and flooring in the kitchen. The stools are from Palecek.

A concrete entry wall is formed amid the area’s namesake black boulders. Integrated into it are storage for garbage and firewood.
