Designer Emily Rand mixed expensive and more affordable finishes to stay within budget, combining Moroccan encaustic Clé tile with wall-mounted sinks from Kohler in the kids’ bathroom.

Architect Carles Oliver rehabbed an old, empty building in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, over the course of three years for just over $21,000. While the majority of the budget went towards improving energy efficiency, such as installing roof insulation, the rest was spent on removing layers of architecture to reveal the original construction, including the stone-clad walls and wooden ceilings.

The backsplash is made of large cement tiles that were sawed into smaller pieces and rearranged to give a mottled look. An appliance garage hides the "non-sexy things you want to put away," laughs Andrew—the blender, the toaster, and so on.

With the addition of a curtain, a niche above the hallway will become a guest sleeping area. The chair is from IKEA.

David and Annemie's daughter swings in the living room. A door provides access to the lush backyard and surrounding area. “The kids have a lot of freedom. They have a big area where they can go and play without needing supervision,” says Annemie.

Concrete from the exterior continues indoors as a fireplace surround. For the couch, Annemie found the wooden base and cushion covers in a secondhand store and used baby mattresses as inserts. David made the oak back.

Many of the furnishings were made by the couple from salvaged materials. David designed and built the oak cabinetry in the kitchen, which features a Mortex-coated island.

The master bedroom features a closet in the corridor to use less space. Sight lines lead to the forest from nearly every space.

A Danish Rocking Chair by Ole Wanscher has new upholstery and sits with an Interlude Hunt Side Table. The brass mobile is from design partner Julie Metzinger.

The “deconstructed plaid” custom mural on the walls is by Kelly Zeller. The 2020 Pink luminatin art piece in the hallway is by Letitia Quessenberry for BLSH 13. The BluDot bed is flanked by Bocci 28S wall lights.

The walnut cabinets are natural walnut, designed by Natalie Officer for Sims Lohman. Kitchen appliances are Miele.

A Blu Dot table is surrounded by custom made stools by Dan Druley Craftsman. A Dolomite slab, Enigma in 3cm, covers the counters. The overhead light is Roll and Hill Fiddlehead Cantilever.

Custom oak cabinetry in the kitchenette was given a modern treatment to balance the more rustic elements in the setting, like the ceiling and antique table-turned-kitchen island. The faucet is by Kingston Brass.
