“One of the great things about the Marvin lift-and-slide doors is how they disappear into the pockets,” notes Meelena. “It’s not a typical solution, and it offers exactly what we hoped to achieve with this home. We wanted to foster an intimate connection with the outdoors.”

The lower level is clad in locally sourced stone. The punched windows feature weathered steel accents.

Before moving here, the family lived in a tract home with a “postage stamp yard,” says Jimmy, who heads a commercial construction firm. Now, on weekends, he likes to ride his dad’s 1977 John Deere tractor and mow the fields. “When I come home, I get to shut off from my day job,” he says.

The residents removed vestiges of bad renovations from the past. “The 11-foot ceiling had been lowered in some rooms, which was a popular thing to do in Sweden in the 1970s in order to save energy,” Martin explains. “Some of the stucco had been destroyed, so we re-created both ceilings and windows.” The restored floors are original; the residents also removed and replaced all the electrical outlets, switches, and door handles. - Gothenburg, Sweden Dwell Magazine : September / October 2017
