An open layout allows the main living spaces to seamlessly mingle.

Before: The entry into the home was tight.

The fireplace column was extended up to the ceiling and finished with drywall, and a gas insert. Hong flanked either side with useful nooks, including bookshelves and storage on one side, and a built-in bench on the other. The large sectional is from Room & Board, and it sits atop an EQ3 rug with a Menu coffee table.

The couple bought the home in 2010 from the original owner, and it hadn't been touched in decades.

The design of the house and the search for a suitable builder took Zeberio a year and a half. Construction was completed in five months.

The railings in the casitas echo the details of the main house. The stair treads are painted the same dusty blue as the loft floor. These tiny bunkhouses are designed to sleep a family of four, and also house a little kitchenette and bathroom.

The design team took down the wall at the front door, and now circulation flows to the existing gallery hall. The ceiling light—a vintage, opaline glass industrial Bauhaus pendant found on 1stdibs—illuminates the new floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

The weekend house that architect James Cutler designed for Jeff Albertson and Ben Vogt on a remote stretch of Washington State’s Pacific coast fits unobtrusively into its surroundings. The building pad was small, so Cutler stepped the structure up the slope. Rough-sawn red cedar cladding was chosen for textural contrast and its resistance to rot.

The roof overhang provides shelter to the entry with an oak front door from Lyndon Doors.

A picture window and wooden windowsill are among the considerate touches in the galley kitchen.
