The master bedroom features large windows that work to expand the small space. The natural light also brings the palette of natural materials to life. "We went all natural by filling the space with organic textures in soft tones—wool for warmth under the feet, simply detailed elm veneer joinery, gently oiled, pink or cream clay walls for porosity and soft tones, and linen curtains for translucency,
“I had always hoped to work with Louis, having been contemporaries at university,” says client Jemima Garthwaite. “At last that opportunity came around as I gained planning permission to build a mansard extension for my home in Hackney.” The new extension is home to a master bedroom with pink clay rendered walls and an en-suite and dressing room with a similarly rich material palette.
“All of the light wood finishes and natural light that comes through the house creates a really nice warm atmosphere,” says Francesca Grace, who worked on the furniture styling. In the living room Grace placed the Perimeter Grey Sofa from CB2, with a Deja 35” Round Coffee Table from Poly and Bark. Artwork in the room includes pieces by Karen Folgner and Melissa Stone Mangham.
The architects maintained the midcentury post-and-beam construction and Japanese-inspired details of the original building, while brightening and expanding the interior living spaces. Patricia Urquiola’s Tufty-Time sofa for B&B Italia meets Pebble coffee tables by Nathan Yong for Ligne Roset in the living room.
