Perched atop a rocky two-acre lot overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the enchanting 1957 home is now seeking a whopping $12.5 million.

Located on a sloped wooded site, the 7,500-square-foot Bridge House encompasses two stories and a finished basement. The multigenerational abode by Höweler + Yoon Architecture embraces its sylvan setting through floor-to-ceiling glass walls and generously sized terraces on the first and second stories.

The couple installed new wide-plank, European white oak floors throughout, which "sets the tone" throughout the entire house, says Catherine. "There’s just a graciousness to it. That small change was so transformative." The staircase tread was painted in a coat of Farrow & Ball’s Light Gray.

A former playhouse is now a guesthouse with a bathroom.

The architects removed two small closets (necessitating supports in their place) and added a new fireplace surround that mirrors those downstairs.

Existing oak flooring was custom stained to match the preserved mahogany woodwork.

In the living room, a new faceted, blackened-steel fireplace surround is juxtaposed with leaded glass windows. "The existing portions of the house offer more formal and internal spaces for cozy entertaining and lounging," says Chadbourne.

Much of the original detail throughout the house was retained and refurbished, such as the barrel-vaulted ceilings, metal railing, and woodwork in the front hall.

The addition houses a kitchen and family room on the main level, and the master bedroom and roof deck above. Sliding glass doors now allow generous sightlines to the yard, and also convey a lightness to the new architecture that contrasts with the character of the old.

The French Norman–style home was built in 1927 and sits on over half an acre in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. The architects preserved much of its original detail in a 2018 remodel.

The design team took down the wall at the front door, and now circulation flows to the existing gallery hall. The ceiling light—a vintage, opaline glass industrial Bauhaus pendant found on 1stdibs—illuminates the new floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

The team kept the skylights, and the third-floor space is primarily used as a playroom.

Herringbone floor tile is consistent with the wood floors throughout the home, while a wall of mosaic tile makes an eye-catching backdrop to the vanity.

The view from the kitchen is layered, first glimpsing a partial view of the dining room and the stained glass at the front exterior in the distance.

The colors in the furniture highlight the rich tones of the preserved stained glass.

With regards to the woodwork, "all of the new stuff that we added all have modern profiles," says Rausch, but their application recalls the home’s traditional roots. White paint marries new and old.

A chic dressing room is also included with the master suite.

Off the bedroom is a bright and airy master bath.
