An ipe deck slopes sharply skyward behind Amy Persinâs house in Menlo Park, California, creating a secluded backyard getaway that feels like an outdoor extension of her living room. A single step on either side leads to patches of gravel, which her children have claimed as areas for unstructured play.
A cedar-slat rain screen hangs on the facade of Denis Carpenterâs concrete house in Jersey City, softening its appearance and adding a modest dash of color. Carpenter keeps the awning-style windows open in the spring and summer, creating a draft that compensates for the lack of an air-conditioning system.
The houseâs new lime plaster walls, seen here in the courtyard, contrast with the old brick wall that divides the house from KolasiĆskiâs adjoining carpentry shop. Though the house itself is small, the outdoor spaces and furniture studio bring its total square footage to nearly 11,000 square feet.
