Specially developed by SunPower, the Maxeon Cell produces 55% more energy than the industry standard. The difference lies in the copper backing: unlike metal paste, which is commonly used, this material takes in more light and resists decay. Thick connectors flex to keep the cell intact through rough weather.

After a coat of 'ruskin bronze' Kelly Moore paint and the addition of a copper downspout, the house was completely transformed. If you look closely, the outline of the former horse-and-carriage plaque remains on the hayloft door. Photo by Susanne Friedrich.

Re-clad with rigid insulation and painted Hardie-board, and topped with a ventilated roof with deep overhangs, the old Victorian is many times more comfortable and energy-efficient than it used to be, while still retaining its original character.

Although the old window and door openings of the original building remain visible from the exterior, they were covered on the inside with veneer. Instead, large windows on the roof and a clear glass door supply the interior with adequate daylight.

“The main volume presents a traditional front and is wrapped on the west and south by a deep porch,” says architect Erin Sterling Lewis. “Living and dining spaces access the porch.” A standing seam metal roof with a Kynar finish and HardiePlank Lap Siding cover the exterior of this 3,000-square-foot home.

Tom Givone's current weekend abode, nicknamed the Floating Farmhouse, is—so far—his capstone project, a synthesis of personal taste, material experimentation, and historically sensitive restoration: a living laboratory for how to bring the vernacular past into the present.

Built by a crew of three, the home makes a virtue out of being unfussy and straightforward. The north-facing glass wall under the gable, with a triple-glazed facade, doesn't require shading or insulation. The quick-to-build structure—which consists of just structural insulated panels (SIB) made from OSB panels with a foam core, and a concrete floor that retains heat—doesn't include any complicated systems or require much maintenance.
