Shiny white paint covers the minimalist plywood interior on the first floor, which contains a small wood-burning stove, a kitchen with a fold-out dining table, and a small living area. The double-height space and large sections of glazing make the compact space feel much larger than its size suggests.

Refugio 3x3 comprises two approximately three-meter-cubed volumes stacked together, and a three-meter-by-three-meter deck made of laurel wood salvaged from an old structure. The structure is elevated above the ground to minimize site impact.

Though the refuge is set in a forest, proximity to a residential development allowed for connections to on-site utilities.

Located in La Unión, a city and commune in Chile’s Los Ríos region, Refugio 3x3 is set in a forest on the side of a new lot of residential houses that were built in response to the recent expansion of city limits.

In one kitchen, the countertops are Corian, while in the other, you’ll find stainless steel. “We changed materials for each to give them a different identity,” says Elsley.

“We are located near the river, which is why we make sure that all the products we use are biodegradable, not tested on animals, and made with natural ingredients,” Gabriel says.

“We developed a landscaping masterplan and biological corridors in order to develop a holistic reforestation in the environment,” Gabriel says.

“Our cabins are designed to meet high standards of energy efficiency and, at the same time, offer comfort to our guests,” Gabriel says.
