Oriented to face the west, the interconnected modules fan out to provide three slightly different views of the adjacent gully between two rises in the landscape.

“The Swedish black pine tar stain is a heritage process that we have employed on several projects, and it is always a joy to perpetuate this technique,” says Keating of the exterior finish.

"My goal was to carry on the client’s family legacy by creating a very special place that took inspiration from the landscape,” explains architect Tom Kundig.

The design of the house and the search for a suitable builder took Zeberio a year and a half. Construction was completed in five months.

The DH House is wrapped in a layer of 10-centimeter insulation and standing-seam metal cladding.

"Taking advantage of the astonishing views of the valleys, maintaining privacy from the public road, and strategically orientating the building in the hot and humid Taiwan climate became the major site factors for this project," explains Zeberio.

Built on a tight budget of $120,000, a retirement home in the mountains delivers unexpected contemporary design to a rural township.

When the Casali family gave Michael Krus and Prishram Jain of TACT Architecture free rein to work with unconventional materials, the architects responded by creating a geometric 4,300-square-foot smart home encased in aluminum panels by Agway Metals. The front facade features Cor-Ten steel fabricated by Praxy Cladding.

A modern interpretation of the traditional dogtrot home, Camp Baird comprises two cabins placed along an L-shaped orientation. An elongated, solar-heated lap pool runs the length of the south-facing side, alongside an expansive ipe deck that measures nearly 1,600 square feet.
