The entrance opens into a light-filled hall, with a Marcel Wanders chandelier and a Luna console table by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance.

An oversized mahogany door provides a grand entrance to the complex.

A new entry was created with a door set at a slightly lower elevation than the original.

Influenced by Southern California’s Case Study House program, designer Bob Butler conceived a luminous residence and guest house on a sloping lot in Nashville that originally held a red-brick ranch-style duplex. Western red cedar lines the walkway from the carport to the entrance. The Globe lights are from West Elm.

A bright yellow front door adds a bold pop of color to the minimal exterior palette.

Metal, brick, and wood harmonize near the entrance of the house.

A honed basalt walkway leads to the re-imagined front door.

The height of oversized doors can be offset or accentuated with long hardware.

The front door pivots open. The interior floors are polished concrete.

Reclaimed barn boards were used to form the exposed concrete interior walls, which provide thermal mass for significant energy savings. The door with the round window leads to the sauna.

The Inside Out residence has narrow, sheltered ledges along its perimeter where cats can nap in the sun.
