Nick rebuilt all the doors and windows from old-growth redwood. The doors have Baldwin mortise locksets.

In the second bedroom, a ladder custom built by Nick leads to a loft area with a custom bed by Michael Mellon and Benjamin Winslow below. The casework is all old-growth redwood. The bedding is from Morrow Goods, and the rug is from Slow Roads.

The home now features three bedrooms, including a brand-new one on the highest level.

During site excavation, a collection of large, glacial boulders was discovered. Ken, who is interested in geology wanted to keep them on property, so Signal Architecture worked as many as they could into the landscape. The slatted fir wall separates the home’s dining area from the guest wing.

Architect Mark Johnson has long been inspired by the texture produced by traditional Indigenous canoe carving. The design team worked with Jim Barker at British Columbia woodworking studio Barker Manufacturing, to produce Ken and Joan’s cedar door. Its texture was produced using a CNC adze.

The guest bedroom, as well as other parts of the house, have a plywood accent wall. “My family's in the plywood business and they have been making plywood for over a hundred years,” says Holly. “This is not your typical Home Depot plywood. This is really clear with a nice veneer on it. So, we were able to do a special run of plywood that had a really beautiful grain to it, and it adds so much richness to our home.” The sconces are from Cedar & Moss.

In the primary bedroom, ten-foot-tall doors from Sierra Pacific open to a patio.

With windows looking out onto the second-story courtyard, the laundry/bathroom area has a custom-made and a picturesque view.

In the hallway another set of sliders shows off a mix of influences from shoji to Schindler, with multitoned wood reflecting the sunlight.

The main room's cathedral ceilings reach 30 feet high.
