The owners built the house as a place to gather with their three adult children on Loon Lake, where they had vacationed at the husband’s family home for years. The modern Adirondack chairs are by Loll Designs.

Architect Allison Reeves was renovating a townhome in Red Hook when she discovered that the existing redbrick facade was falling apart. With contractor John Fasano, she put in a new exterior of dark bricks, punctuated by a slanted pane of glass by Bieber Windows. A new roof supports a deck as well as the home's mechanicals, which the residents opted to move out of harm's way after Hurricane Sandy flooded other homes in the area.

A narrow corridor connects the three volumes, with shelving for Edna’s books and art collection and large picture windows overlooking the patios.

“There’s confusion that the more expensive the design is, the more of a luxury it is. But expensive materials do not make the design,” Edna says.

A lofted drawing studio features a sawtooth roof with expansive skylights that frame the branches of a jacaranda tree overhead.

White oak cabinetry features throughout the Weave house—including in the marble-clad master bathroom. The walk-in shower area with a copper soaking tub transforms from a private retreat to an outdoor experience with a pivoting door, custom built by Identity Construction.

The water-resistant ipe wood deck wraps around two existing trees.

Views of the grasslands can be seen from both sides of the kitchen.

Sliding glass doors open to reveal the interior of the pool house, which boasts a line of clerestory windows just below the roof.

Renton Hill Residence's dining room opens up to an expansive outdoor area via a massive metal door. Citizen Design Collaborative strategically integrated original and modern details to create a unique home designed to bring people together and age beautifully as the house is passed down through generations.

According to the architects, the house's "thinner dimensions not only display refinement of technique, but also remove visual weight from materials—the position being that lightness is good for the human spirit and visual heaviness is not."

The ten-by-six-foot solid wood door has a traditional "waving wood" pattern to the surface.

Japanese practice Kengo Kuma and Associates teamed up with Suteki America to build the Suteki House for the 2017 NW Natural Street of Dreams residential construction showcase in Oregon. The home "envisions a new mode of suburban living by combining Japanese spatial principles and a nature-based, American way of life," according to the architects.
