O’Sullivan designed the ceiling “to have a knitted or woven quality like that of wool or silk.” It dives down over the kitchen and dining area, eventually reaching a point at the entry that is low enough to touch. Here, resident Jes Wood leans against the onyx kitchen island while her daughter Ruby hangs out. Replica Jean Prouvé chairs surround the dining table; a vase by Bruce and Estelle Martin for Kamaka Pottery sits on top. The Reel table under the television is by Atelier Oï for B&B Italia.

A mix of vintage and modern pieces furnish the home, including a table by Arne Vodder for George Tanier, an IKEA rug, and a Lambert & Fils chandelier in the dining room. A bar cart from her grandmother is one of Sarah’s most prized possessions. The ceiling color is Benjamin Moore Marine Blue.

New York City-based Schaffer built the house in Guilford on a tight budget, since it’s currently her family’s second home. As an architect, she had say over where the kitchen, the heart of the abode, was situated. "I can see the pool, and when I'm cooking something, I can still see the kids.” It’s the main point of egress to the back patio and has the best view of the Long Island Sound.

While they managed to salvage the walls and parts of the roof, everything else was in disrepair from sitting unused for years. The architects had to install electricity, water, and sewage to make the house functional for modern times. Solar panels were added to provide hot water (from a private well), in-floor heating, and electricity. Now, the house is self-sustainable and completely off the grid.

The materials palette is similarly restrained, making the only natural piece of wood in the house—the almost 14-foot-long walnut slab in the kitchen—really stand out. "If there was wood everywhere it would lose its gravitas," notes Chris.
