The home’s modest size meant Caleb did not have to worry too much about material and labor costs. For example, all the interior walls are done in plaster, which is three-to-four times more expensive than drywall in Maine.

A main goal of the renovation was to open the home to its unique perch in Glen Park. On a clear day, it's possible to see from downtown to the South and East Bay.

The goal: create a living space that would be connected to the garden, with great functionality. “They wanted a house they could raise children in, to the point where their children could be teenagers and adult children,” says Dovey. “They were really thinking forward into the future.”

“We chose aluminum wood-clad windows because the material is high quality and energy-efficient,” says Wijaya. “They offer more design options and match well with the style of this house. We particularly wanted to add arches, windows, and doors to enhance the Spanish Revival character.”

A 12-foot-wide sliding pocket wall opens the living/dining area to a spacious terrace.

One end of the former gallery now hosts built-in storage, shelving, and a daybed.

A dining nook is framed by timber beams running above the space. The sunny corner is illuminated by an additional grouping of clerestory windows.

Sunset pendants by Treviso-based Torremato illuminate a custom table and bench as well as a trio of Eames chairs. Di Stefano and Bongiorno used lighting to structure the open plan: “We put accents on focus points; we didn’t want the light completely spread out,” Di Stefano says.
