From the architect: “[The house] provides its inhabitants with a sanctuary through its relaxed atmosphere and privacy and gains warmth through extensive use of timbers, complementing the strength and raw tactile character of the in situ concrete walls.”

2. JB Apartment

Architect: Marina Salles Luz, Location: São Paulo, Brasil

From the architect: “The JB Apartment was designed for a young couple; their main request was to have a space that looked like they lived in a house. So, instead of just making the living room bigger by attaching the terrace area to it, [I] decided to use different materials to promote this sensation of a big terrace inside the apartment, and at the same time keep all of the spaces integrated.”

3. Chilmark House

Design firm: Schiller Projects, Location: Chilmark, Massachusetts

From the design firm: “The Chilmark House project covers almost five acres of previously unbuilt land in the heart of the farming and artistic community that is ‘Up-Island’ Martha’s Vineyard. Based on a shared love of the dense aggregation of New England’s farm complexes, we sited the studio and the house barns tightly together, creating a charged outdoor space between them, which provides the approach to the house’s entrance. The ceilings in the public rooms lift to the high ridges, with dropped areas to create a sleeping loft high in the roof. The lower level consists of a series of bedrooms with shared spaces between that look into light wells landscaped with local rocks and moss.”

4. Renovated Midcentury

Architect: Preston Bolton, Location: Houston, Texas

From the realtor: “This home was built in 1970 by Preston Bolton—one of Houston's most well-respected midcentury architects—as his personal home. The home has been significantly renovated while maintaining the integrity of its historical significance.”

5. Pleasant St. Urban Abode

Platte Architecture + Design ensured that the family's art and heirlooms would be the center of attention by using a cohesive palette of wide-plank wood floors, crisp white walls, and black accents throughout Pleasant St. Urban Abode." layout="" credit="Photo by Chad Mellon" photoUserId="6141667799337619456"/>

Architect: Platte Architecture + Design, Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

From the architect: “Pleasant St. Urban Abode is a three-story residential infill project located on a double lot in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati. The main living space is elevated to the third floor, with lofty clerestory windows and a cantilevered deck over the auto court below. Eight-foot-tall doorways and minimal trim accentuate the third-floor living space. Windows were placed high on walls where possible to fill rooms with daylight.”
