Designed with the biomorphic form language of 1950s American design in mind, these playful and sleek Turtle coffee tables feature a powder-coated stainless steel top and solid oak legs.

Repainting isn't necessary to get new life out of old building materials—scraping paint off can provide an entirely new aesthetic that still speaks to an element's history and materiality.

Marble is also used on the kitchen countertops. There are no visible door handles in the entire apartment—including the refrigerator.

In New York City, Sarah Zames of General Assembly renovated a Greenwich Village loft originally constructed in 1868. "The client wanted to maximize the efficiency of the space," she says. Zames and her team completely overhauled the space to create a modern haven in bustling Manhattan.

With the Kirio system, Dave can control the lights from anywhere using his mobile phone. “I’m learning to use the app, but normally I just manually override it,” he admits. The priority of the project (and the budget) was performance. Dave saved money with furnishings from major retailers, which he paired with select custom pieces, like a side table by the architecture firm, and souvenirs from his travels.

The living room is furnished with rattan chairs from Fritz Hansen, a Muuto side table, an Artichoke pendant by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, and a blue Living Divani sofa, one of a few color-popping accents found throughout.

Broden gave the formerly low-ceilinged living room a high pitch and added more windows for light. For the floors, Lena chose salvaged oak hand-laid in a herringbone pattern. The Roar + Rabbit dresser is from West Elm.

Wylie’s bedroom features a rug from the Land of Nod and a sign from a local shop. “I put the shelves up myself on my seventh attempt,” Lena says. “If I move them, I guarantee you’ll see nineteen holes.”

Furnished with vintage Eames chairs, a second-hand sofa, and pendants and tables designed by Nathalie, the space is kept purposefully casual. She painstakingly mixed and tested the paint for the mustard-yellow walls herself—15 times—to match the hue of a Kvadrat textile.
