The great room is enlivened by the couple's books and ephemera, as well as an orange Mohm fireplace suspended from the ceiling.

A modest kitchen is tucked at one end of the great room, illuminated not only by two walls of glass but a pair of skylights above.

A double-height great room offers extra storage accessed by a vintage library ladder, and a pair of loft rooms underneath the pitch of the exposed, plywood-covered vaulted ceiling.

The architects used natural materials and colors in the kitchen to make the space feel serene, expansive, and connected to the outdoors.

"The kids love playing and singing and I have this principle that if things aren't visible or easy to get, you won't use them. For them to play, their toys need to be visible, or if we want to cook, the food has to be visible."

The TV does not dominate the living room space. Instead, it is hidden behind a red glass screen and there is also a pull-down projector screen for family movie nights.

"I believe that if there’s a place for everything then nothing is out of place, and I’ve tried to incorporate that into a lot of the furniture design and functionality,

A fluted glass cabinet by Sklum keeps everything organized, while an eye-catching sculptural toilet by Trond mirrors the round forms of the lamps and mirrors, enhancing the warmth of the bathroom.

Now clear, clean and crisp, the kitchen was reinstated as the heart of the family home and bestowed with custom flooring and cabinetry.

Oak parquet restores the apartment’s original historic charm to the hallway while setting a warm and bright tone upon entering.

The ceiling drops down significantly over the built-in bench in the living area to create a cozy nook. “Like the kitchen, it’s a space within a space,” Thomas says. The wooden boards are flush with the window frame, allowing the sun to wash down the wall.

On one side of the house, a white central staircase leads to a split-level landing the Robertsons call "the reading room." "We needed a place to hang out and for the kids to read," explains owner Vivi Nguyen-Robertson. Awaiting the birth of the couple's son, she relaxes in a built-in reading nook in the library.
