Designers Kathryn Heller and Kevin Short covered a 16-foot window wall in their San Francisco loft with custom curtains fabricated from 65 yards of block-printed fabric sourced from India. The curtains are motor-operated, and a black-out liner ensures good sleep in the bedroom upstairs. An additional sheer liner facilitates daytime light and privacy.

By saving money on her dining table, which is a piece of walnut countertop from IKEA, Morrison was able to budget for splurges like a bespoke, pink velvet sofa from Anthropologie.

A section out of the central living pavilion was cut out to create an angled deck with a pergola. This angle allows the windows to be true north and creates an interesting feature.

A Danca dos Ratos, a massive diptych by Luiza, hangs in the living/dining area. CH-24 Wishbone chairs by Hans Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn surround a table designed by Tito. A vintage Thonet rocker sits next to armchairs that were brought from Germany by Luiza’s grandmother during World War II.

Painted on the glass-enclosed terrace, one of her works adds a pop of color to the stark exterior, as does the garden below. “The garden is a mass of color, like a large outdoor painting,” says Tito.

Part of Kao's solution was a three-story atrium, which features a Cor-Ten steel sculpture by local artist Melissa MacDonald. The floor lamp is by Frank Lloyd Wright.

“We knew it would be a place for art, music, and conversation—something that went beyond shelter,” says Julie. Designer Michael Kao’s first priority was to bring light to the ground floor.

Stairs lead down to the semi-below grade bedrooms.

Homeowners Luciano Bedoya and Liya Moya worked with interior designer Augusta Pastor on the furnishings. The Ghost sofa is by Paola Navone for Gervasoni, the Beni Ourain rug is from Mascarpone Originale, the About A Lounge 92 chair is by Hay, and the coffee table is by Primas.

The mezzanine and upper loft are clad in wood, which fosters consistency with the lower level.

This 1920s four-story brick home in the Rock Creek neighborhood of Washington, D.C., fits into the neighborhood with a row of conservative homes, but the back presents a more unique facet—a line of windows, and a series of glass boxes jutting out from the main house. Inside is equally unique with unconventional forms in wall panels, deep window frames, and built-in shelving, all made from plywood.

For a private shower, Clayden closes the blinds on the bedroom windows, though how he manages to elude the prying eyes of nosy house guests is still a mystery.

The outcrop of rock and a tree have been incorporated into the design of the home.

In the entryway, a Tati lamp by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell sits on a shelf Christopher made from kitchen cabinetry scraps.
