Creative Proposals for New Teaching Facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard

A design competition drew submissions for a new teaching facility, dubbed the ONE Lab, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard's renovated Building 128. The building is among a series of structures dedicated to innovation; the site also contains the New Lab, a 161,000 square foot hub for design prototyping. Here, take a look at the winning concepts.

On the top level of the structure lies an indoor garden, which receives sunlight by way of skylights.

Self Growing Lab: Diaz Paunetto Arquitectos (San Juan)

The other first-place prize went to an amorphous concept by Puerto Rican firm Diaz Paunetto Arquitectos. Built of a genetically manipulated bacteria laid on a structural frame, the concept could theoretically be manipulated and even expand on its own to meet the facility's shifting needs over time.

According to the firm, the lab structure is conditioned to adapt to its environment, so it can be installed outdoors as well.

The third-place project suggests a new, raised roof structure that would house the learning facility on the upper levels, in addition to a public gathering space for the Navy Yard on the lower level.

Skool Haus: Nikole Bouchard and Vanessa Moon (Milwaukee)

Receiving an honorable mention, this concept—inspired by the Yard's naval history—envisions the learning process as something that can stay on land or move onto the water.
