Cozy Home in Portland Is Under 800 Square Feet

Designer Shannon Baird conceived of this 796-square-foot dwelling off the back of a larger home in Portland.

A client with grown children requested a small dwelling that could double as a work space.
"We took a lot of time designing the cabinets," Baird says.
In the dining area, a garage door opens up to the adjacent courtyard, thereby doubling the size of the space.
A midcentury modern sofa and chairs are paired with a Japanese Tansu cabinet.
To contrast the dark exterior, the interiors are all painted white.
The gap between the house and the fence creates a small patio with space for raised bed vegetable gardening.
