Traditionally home to merchants and craftspeople, a machiya is a type of Japanese wooden townhouse that originated in the Heian period and developed through the Edo and Meiji periods.

Architect Miljana Salinovic remodelled this 300-year old cottage with steel frames that preserved the texture of the traditional flint walls, and added a new extension clad in charred cedar.
