Brandon and Katy spent two years considering how to remodel the kitchen, including whether to remove the original posts. Instead, they help define the space.

The renovated kitchen feels much more spacious thanks to its removed walls. The large kitchen island is clad with salvaged redwood that Brandon found waiting to be burned on a roadside.

With a fireplace, pizza oven and Argentine grill as well as a sheltering awning, the outdoor kitchen has become the heart of the home.

The renovation's most ambitious effort was outside, where a portion of the hillside was carved out and a stone retaining wall built for an outdoor kitchen.

The house enjoys panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and three volcanoes. Its renovation included new stonework in a variety of spots outside.

A covered breezeway connects the main house and the guest house. Here, Legge took the opportunity to play with perspective, framing part of a tree and the sky with an abstract roof cutout.

A rectangular volume in the kitchen holds an in-cabinet fridge, a walk-in pantry, a room with an HVAC system, and a powder room. The pine ceiling and oak cabinetry are complimentary, and the dark backsplash and countertops are a practical choice that grounds the space. "I love cooking," says Jonah, noting that they chose top-tier appliances from Wolf and Sub-Zero. "I wanted to have a kitchen that could be a central gathering point of our home for years to come where our family could gather to cook together and eat together."

Black accents ground the light wood wall paneling, and the vertically installed subway tile adds texture to a peek-a-boo bathroom.

The fireplace is a striking, and popular, feature that the family uses frequently. It was an investment upfront, but will prove a cost-effective choice as time goes on. "Our unit can warm our entire family space including the kitchen, living room, dining room, and office with a more than 90-percent efficiency rating," the homeowner explains.

"The forest outside our windows brings us joy from the moment we wake up in the morning," says Jonah, "while we watch the hawks and birds and drink our coffee to the period of dusk when the deer pass through on their evening foraging and the fox come out of hiding."

The cozy living area offers original beams and a charcoal black-painted inglenook fireplace.

The contemporary extension awaits at the rear of the home, housing a bright, open-plan kitchen and dining room. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure ample natural light sweeps in.
