When homeowners Bata and Rose Mataja first came across the 32 acres of raw land, Bata was decidedly undaunted by the idea of building a home in the remote, undeveloped setting. “I was too ignorant to know better, and not afraid of challenges,” he says.

Arriving at the cabin is now a joyous ritual. “Every time we push the gates back and see the view it’s this sense of ‘we’ve arrived’,” Matt says.

This metal-clad house makes the most of its lush surroundings with 30-foot-tall windows and ample outdoor space.

The owners' love of Sea Ranch style inspired the architecture of their home, which surrounds a courtyard protecting three large redwoods.

A series of “stacked boxes” laid the foundation for this Sea Ranch–inspired home on a narrow site set on two flood zones and filled with protected redwoods.

The home is entered from a small porch on the lower level, just to the right of a carport created by the steel-reinforced cantilevering form. The lower level is nestled into the hillside.

The wings of this cruciform residence jut out over the landscape on stilts to capture panoramic views.

Designed by Roger Lee, this lightly updated 1957 home still has its original wood paneling, exposed beams, and open-hearth fireplace.

Outside the master bedroom, a small deck is tucked beneath the flat roof. The tub is by Maax.

Marchesa co-founder Keren Craig acquired the property 14 years ago and has since transformed and expanded it into a sprawling 4,635-square-foot residence.
