Anti-Pocket Door

Submitted by: Name not provided

Designer's Description:

Purchasing a vintage rehabbed condo has its drawbacks when the space is not fully functional. A small Chicago urban setting, small condominiums cannot afford any inefficiency in the little things, like a door swing. A traditional pocket door is not feasible due to the plumbing chase in the location where the pocket would be housed. The bathroom door swing's reversal is not ideal due to the proximity of the entry door's swing. The only viable solution is an externally mounted sliding door.

The upstairs showers are particularly ingenious: Operable skylights loom above, and perforated, galvanized-steel platforms open up to spacious, sunken bathtubs.

In the bathroom, the architects mounted a Kohler sink on a sloped, custom-slate countertop. Since the stone doesn’t hold up well in water, the architect switched to black mosaic tile in the shower. The faucets are from Cabano’s Century series.

For modern chefs on-the-go, Bosch appliances are expedient and efficient. The speed convection microwave marries the power of a convection oven with the convenience of a microwave, and the European-style steam convection oven cooks and reheats food in a way that retains its texture, taste, freshness, and nutrients. Their wall ovens have the option of a SideOpening door, a feature that provides better access to the oven cavity.
