The ceiling height in this room was dictated by the dimensions of the lofted bedroom above. In order to preserve the eight-foot-tall windows, Kaplan designed a light well around the top. “We did not want to cut off the tops of those triple windows because they’re really stunning,” says Kaplan. “I love that about our renovated projects, where you turn a deficit into a strength.”

Arctic Bath’s logjam-like design takes inspiration from the old practice of transporting felled trees by river. The rounded structure floats on Sweden’s Lule River during summer and freezes into its surface in winter.
“The daybed in the foyer was the client’s idea, and we conceived this concept that blends functions in a seamless way,” says lead architect Mike Hill. The daybed invokes the same color scheme as the rest of the home, but the subtle texture changes allows it to stand out. It makes a comfy seating area for additional guests, but also provides a cozy nook for solo reading or relaxing.
Riffing on local farmhouses, architects Patrick Walker and Elizabeth Demetriades covered the 4,000-square-foot house in rough-sawn red cedar and capped it with a standing-seam galvalume roof.
