Architect Jonathan Solomon and city planner Meg Gustafson had experience designing houses, but not together, which made renovating their late-1800s home in Chicago’s Uptown all the more exciting—particularly when you consider their style is anything but traditional.

The “deconstructed plaid” custom mural on the walls is by Kelly Zeller. The 2020 Pink luminatin art piece in the hallway is by Letitia Quessenberry for BLSH 13. The BluDot bed is flanked by Bocci 28S wall lights.

The vibrancy of the décor and attention to smaller details makes the apartment recognizably ‘Hayon’.

A study overlooking the living room includes a Bucket Chair by Piet Hein Eek. Bedrooms are down the hall; beyond them is the open- air walkway that leads to the rooms over the garage—what Subissati calls the “hybrid space” because of its fabric cover.

The forest feeling continues in the evergreens surrounding the house. Adding to the outdoor area are Artemide Dioscuri sconces and Loll Designs outdoor dining furniture from Design Within Reach.

The new patio connects to a fire pit lounge area via the wood walkway. Naber worked with McCullough Landscape to fashion the cement and rock patio. Decomposed granite replaced the grass, and Naber planted succulents from her wedding alongside cacti and native plants for a more drought-tolerant landscape.

Rows of globe lights featured throughout the rooms cast light in all directions—including up at the ceiling.

The interior doors were replaced with flush, solid core doors painted Farrow & Ball Inchyra Blue.
