Ten minutes from British Columbia’s prized Whistler and Blackcomb ski areas, this house is located on a small lot atop a hill. Embracing a vertical layout, the upper level is where the open living area, complete with sectional, wood-burning stove, marble island, and spacious dining table, is found. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the forest views are especially heady.
Tasked by John Powers and Jennifer Bostic with renovating a run-down cottage that was never meant to be lived in year round, Otto Ruano of Lead Studios transformed the space while keeping as much of it intact as possible. Potence lamps by Jean Prouvé illuminate the kitchen and living area. The bifold doors are by Loewen.
Back to that Ferrari-red kitchen to begin planning your creative cooking experience, using fresh-picked local organic produce, local shellfish, or grass-fed wagyu beef filets... The fully equipped kitchen hosts high-end state of the art appliances.
The Barn Gallery Hey Home app (available now) will help you find what you need; inside the kitchen, at the Barn Gallery, and on the Island with our copious list of Island experiences.
In the kitchen, they took down a wall and made an island instead of a peninsula, as well as added a breakfast nook. To add more storage and display some of their more beautiful wares, they made wood shelves with classic white subway tile above the breakfast nook. “Now, whoever is in the kitchen is never isolated from the rest of the family and it's made it so much easier for every day life and also entertaining.”
The relocated kitchen is anchored to one side of the home, rendering the rest of the space open and usable. White custom cabinetry and Caesarstone counters keep the room bright and airy. The kitchen appliances are from Miele, with the addition of a Sub-Zero refrigerator and ceiling-mounted Futuro Futuro flush range hood.
