Large decks and walls of glass blur the boundaries between indoor/outdoor living.

Rustic, Scandinavian-style The Hut, in Ohio, is a true family affair; the sustainable cabin, covered in cedar shingles, was built by architect Greg Dutton and his brother and father. Inside, views are amplified through a 25-foot wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.

The main level opens up to provide complete access to the deck.

This airy home makes the most of its beachside location with sustainable design, careful siting, and an expansive, glazed facade.

Tucked away in the rustic-luxe area of Mandeville Canyon, the 3,164-square-foot home offers ample privacy without sacrificing a convenient commute to Los Angeles.

A long, slender skylight illuminates the top-floor lounge area. "The home’s location on the eastern slope of the creek ensures prolonged sunlight throughout the year, while also being optimally exposed to the prevailing rising air currents in the valley," states the firm.

Walls of double-pane, tempered, laminated glass surround the upper living space furnished with Tolomeo lights by Artemide, vintage midcentury chairs, and a custom-made redwood burl table.

A Regency wood-burning stove provides heating to the living space. The floors are tumbled Bluestone tiles.

Like all of the rooms in CMR House, the living room features sweeping garden views.

The impressive living room has polished concrete floors which are contrasted with a white ash plywood ceiling.

The 16-foot fireplace is crafted from local granite and features a five-ton, live-edge mantle stone that carries the marks of its making.

The house’s glassed-in living room provides plenty of scenery. The hanging fireplace and exposed rafters add a sense of lightness as well.

When a couple approached Colorado-based Cottle Carr Yaw (CCY) Architects for a modern mountain retreat, they brought with them images of what would be the founding inspiration behind the new design—a simple and rugged cabin in Norway where the husband and his relatives had been gathering since the 1950s. Much like this ancestral Norwegian cabin, the new getaway is designed with the same rustic charms and deference to the landscape, as well as an inviting environment for friends and family to gather for generations to come.

A minimal material palette is a hallmark of Evoke International Design’s projects.

An expansive glass door trimmed in vertical grain fir opens the interior to the refreshed deck. The designers made sure to keep the frame around the doors thin, in order to capture views and convey the minimal detailing of the original midcentury home. “All those details that go into keeping that eastern window wall as open and permeable as possible kept the essence of the original house, increased the indoor/outdoor connection, and retained that character that we and the owners had responded to in the house,” says Griesmeyer.
