San Francisco–based Studio PLOW brought its sleek aesthetic from the big city to the redwood forest, transforming this weekend retreat from dark and dated to bright and modern.

The tiles in the bathrooms are by Clé Tile and Zia Tile.

Interior designer Eva Holbrook and artist Jamie Williams brought this cozy mountain retreat back to life by embracing an “uncluttered simplicity” design concept. They brought the outdoors in by incorporating wood elements, big windows, and reclaimed materials.

The recessed area in the wooden deck can be used for a fire pit or a vegetable garden.

The model home is furnished with Muji's line of home goods.

Full-height windows surround the living space and provide a strong indoor-outdoor connection to the sylvan surroundings. The sectional and coffee table are both from Rove Concepts

This is a standard kitchen for Hygge Supply's two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath models, and all of the appliances are from Fisher & Paykel. The bright, open-plan layout is cozy and efficient.

The Birch Le Collaboration House and all of the Hygge Supply homes are made from structural insulated panels (SIPs) and steel framing, both of which are designed and cut to spec and delivered to the job site ready for placement, leaving little to no waste onsite. The homes can either be built on a slab-on-grade foundation with concrete floors; pier foundations with Thermory wood floors; or a basement foundation which also includes Thermory wood floors.

An exercise in simplicity, the Sonoma weeHouse consists of two steel-framed volumes with ipe interiors, oiled oak cabinetry, and massive sliding glass walls that overlook valley views.

Jules's room looks out onto the cantilevered deck with little to distract from the view. Alchemy Architects created all of the custom metalwork, including the railings. The Minnesota firm works with a handful of fabricators around the country. Here, Alchemy teamed with Oregon's Fidelity Builders because of its ability to handle the project's high degree of customization.

On the other end of the house, a separate structure houses a sauna, shower, and toilet. 


In search of a Bay Area retreat, Jeff Waldman and Molly Fiffer purchased a piece of land on which to experiment and gain new skills, one task at a time.

The commission was for a robust and efficient little cabin oriented towards the lake.

Located on the Imingfjell mountainside in Norway, this minimalist, 785-square-foot cabin features a "hood" in response to the climate and the region’s strict building regulations.

A bedroom wardrobe wall completes the renovation. Despite the more subdued color, yellow accents continue the apartment’s lively palette.
