These architects, designers, and homeowners set out to resolve one of the most common residential complaints we receive: not enough light.

When Molly Alexander and Graeme Anthony were looking for a house to renovate for their growing family—including five-year-old Chloe, seen here—they didn’t expect to find it right next door to Alexander’s own childhood home. The light-filled sanctuary they created features vintage Singer sewing stools at the American walnut–topped kitchen island and hanging lamps from Ikea.

HAL Tube and Sledge chairs, by Jasper Morrison for Vitra, are arranged around an Extesso dining table by Neo Katoikein. A George Nelson Eye Clock sits on the cantilevered shelving by Pafos, a furniture company based in Oinofyta, Greece, which also constructed the built-in cabinets in the living room. The pendant lamp includes fixtures designed by Lee Broom for Oikos.

Several interior walls were removed so light could penetrate the space more fully. Fiberboards made from recycled cardboard and newspaper fibers line the ceilings and floors.
