Tribeca Family Penthouse

Front Studio principal Yen Ha renovated her family’s eighth-floor penthouse apartment in Tribeca by moving walls and tightening proportions, then applying color and pattern, evidenced by a striking floor-to-ceiling bookcase painted in a rainbow gradient.

With glass raillings, the stairs to the second level invite glimpses through to a double-height bookshelf, filled with books and collected artifacts. Every room in the house is designed with the children in mind, and contains a dedicated space for them—for instance, the craft table under the stairs.

The architecture firm’s in-house joinery company, Fraher and Co, incorporated storage spaces throughout the home. Beneath the kitchen bar, a birch plywood bookcase holds the chef’s collection of cookbooks and music. Shelves flanking the oven also store and showcase dishes, glasses, and wine bottles.

Hughes’ collection of hundreds of books is stored on a vertiginous two story bookcase, which takes up the whole of the northern wall of the living room. It’s an ingenious solution to the small-space dwelling that draws the eye up, adding texture and interest to the room without taking up floor space.
